Firstly thank you to everyone who came along to the Christmast Picnic & Trianing Day yesterday. It was great fun from all accounts everyone had a good time. If you haven’t already done so be sure to check out some of the photos on facebook - you don’t need a face book account to see the photos.
We’ve also put a few videos up that you might enjoy too. Santa throwing water bombs at the “naughty” kids. And a few snippets from the archives of past Soke Cup performances, showing some great bogu kumite points and some kata highlights from a few good performances. Videos on facebook.
We thought that the Soke Cup highlights might be appropriate now that team nominations have now closed for next year’s Soke Cup in Japan. And I have to say that it’s looking like a very strong team!
Now, for a few more exciting things before classes finshed for the year at the end of this week.
In the dojo – frozen treat week, all week, for all kids classes. That’s all I can tell you about this one for now, you’ll have to get into the dojo if you want to know more.
The final Success Focus Mastermind will be this Wed. Although this is not exactly a Karate event, it certainly keeps with the theme of the dojo being a centre for success in our local Sunshine Coast community. The final mastermind meeting for the year will be based on the theme of raising your ” Financial IQ”.
Guest presenter will be Michael Ansell (financial planner) speaking about budgeting for success. And we’ll be playing Robert Kiyosaki’s famous “Cashflow” board game. If you’ve never played before, you don’t want to miss out. It’s great fun and also great learning at the same time.
Everyone is welcome to come along, but RSVP would be appreicated, either via facebook, or contact Sensei Martin.
Success Focus Mastermind – More info & RSVP on facebook.
Wrapping up for the year. The last class for the year will be Friday 18 December. And this will also be the last classes for Senpai Rhys to teach at Sunshine Coast Karate. As many members may already know, Senpai Rhys will be leaving us early in the new year to do some time with the Army, at this stage the plan is just for one year, but you never know where things go. We wish Senpai Rhys all the best and would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all the great work he has done as part of the teaching team and wish him all the best.
Then it’s Christmas & New Year Holiday time at the dojo until Monday 4 January 2010. Classes will be back on then with almost the same training schedule, except for a few minor adjustments for adults in the evening classes. Get a copy of the 2010 Training schedule.
I’m sure we’ll see you in the dojo this week. But just in case we don’t see you, have a great Christmas and we’ll see you in the New Year.

Every 3 years, the top competitors in Chito-Ryu world get together for the Chito-Ryu World Championships, also known as the Soke Cup. Since Chito-Ryu was introduced to the Sunshine Coast in 2000, our dojo has been represented at each Soke Cup. In 2001, Sensei Sandra was the sole representative, who went to Japan, placing 2nd in the Black Belt Women’s Kumite division. In 2004, the Soke Cup was in Australia and the Sunshine Coast dojo was well represented with 17 competitors, coming away with 4 gold medallists, most of whom had only been training for a few years. In the lead up to the 2007 Soke Cup in Norway, Sensei Sandra took on the role of coach for the national team, but due to the birth of Steven about a week before the tournament, Sensei Martin and Sensei Sandra did not attend, but there were still 3 representatives from the Sunshine Coast, with best result being 3rd place in Kata from Sempai Rhys in his age division. For anyone interested, a full listing of results from Sunshine Coast members is available on the website.
For anyone who has ever been to a Soke Cup, they are sure to remember that the best thing about the whole event is the lead up process. The training is intense, physically and mentally demanding for 12-18 months prior to the event. But those who take up the challenge and put in their full effort, grow incredibly throughout the process in their technique and confidence. The next Soke Cup is around 18 months away now and it’s time to start the process all over again and begin preparing for the 2010 Soke Cup in Japan. And we want to know… Do you have what it takes to be a world champion? We know that anyone who really wants to be a world champion can be, because we have done it and we have coached others who have done it.
To become a world champion is really a simple process, challenging, but simple. We know, that even someone who is just starting their training right now could be a World Champion in 2010. The first step is just to make the commitment to join the squad and do exactly what your coaches ask you to do. Over the last 6 months or so, it has really dawned on me how to succeed in just about anything. And I would like to share my secret success formula with you. But before I do, please take some time to think about this, because it will seem all too simple, but it does work. I have seen it work and it’s worked for me many times. Are you ready…?
Step 1 - Find a good teacher or coach, preferably someone who has already done exactly what you want to do.
Step 2 - Copy them and do exactly what they ask you to do.
That’s it! By the way, this doesn’t only apply to karate. It works for anything!
Hopefully by now, you have realised that you already have done the first step. Now here’s the first thing that we are going to ask you to do…
Join the Soke Cup Squad. The first session and squad meeting will be Saturday, 22nd February at Maroochydore dojo 9am-12noon. At this session, you will learn more about the Soke Cup, exactly what it takes to get on the team, what will be expected of you and a whole lot more. Jim Moehead has even organised a Japanese instructor to come in each month to make sure that you have the basics of the Japanese language.
Even if right now, there is just the smallest thought that maybe you could be even slightly interested in going to the Soke Cup or becoming a World Champion, you should be there. Don’t regret not taking this opportunity, I can guarantee that in around 18 months, some of your fellow dojo members will be in Japan celebrating their success at the Soke Cup. The question is… Are you going to be there with them?

I hope you’re ready, because we have been preparing a huge year ahead in the dojo for 2009. Those who have been back into the dojo in the last week would have seen the new paint job, and there has been a lot of positive feedback about the new trianing schedule in the last week of January.
One new addition in 2009 is our Little Champions Kararate Program for children 4-6 years old. Already there is a lot of interest from younger siblings of currnet members along with brand new members getting ready to start. The Little Champions Program will have a modified syllabus and grading system to help lay a strong foundation in Chito-Ryu along with developing coordination, focus, good manners, listening skills and social skills.
Adult members are also very happy to have a much greater range of training opportunities, including: early morning classes, mid morning classes, more evening classes, specialised weapons classes, self-defense classes and sports karate classes. And our kids classes also have more trianing opporunities and specialised classes too.
Due to the demand in 2008, we have increased the opportunity for private tutition with times now available fortnightly instead of monthly.
For more information about some of the exciting things coming up this year, be sure to check out our calendar of events. And if you haven’t made it into the dojo yet, “What are you wainting for?”
