THE last thing John Boman expected to get out of karate lessons was a self-published children’s fantasy book.  But the willpower and discipline of the ancient Japanese martial art were applicable to his own desire to become an author.

The 37-year-old fulfilled a lifelong dream this week with the launch of his novel The Spirit of the Moon. The launch was held at Sunshine Coast Karate in Maroochydore.  “For whatever reason I just never got around to doing any writing in my life,” he said.  “I started karate last November to get some discipline and willpower, and the sensei there asked me what I wanted to do.

“I told him I wanted to be a writer, but that I wasn’t good enough but he encouraged me to give it a go.”  It lit a fire under Mr Boman that was sorely needed.  “I was given a challenge in February to start the book by them, they held me accountable.”
